Cancer Metabolism

Glucose Process

The increased use of glucose and the concomitant metabolic changes in cancer cell metabolism have been known for over 100 years. The mitochondria, historically known as the “powerhouse” of the cell for its production of energy-rich molecules (ATP and NAD), play a critical role in the metabolic changes that support cancer. Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in cancer cell metabolism and the interrelationships between cancer cells and the multi-cellular environment that constitutes the tumor and the adjacent region. These metabolic adaptations, provide the tumor with the necessary nutrients, from nutrient-deprived environments, to maintain viability and to build new biomass.  Madera is applying knowledge of these metabolic processes to identify and develop novel agents to target these unique susceptibilities for therapeutic intervention.
